Space and Architecture. A beach house Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Space and Architecture. A beach house - Essay Example This is then supported by Pierre Bordieu in his â€Å"The Berber House†. He believes that objects, language, events, associated with a certain space are a microcosm of a larger culture. Using this approach of Bordieu in the above picture, a beach house that is built upon a rock or cement, it would already tell us that this house was built for permanency. It is deeply rooted at the bottom of the sea through the cement panels that is supporting the house and making it as stable as possible. Aside from that, the doors are made of glass which is associated with convenience and practicality as glass is something that is easy to find and at the same time would not require so much maintenance as compared to wood. This would give us a notion that the structure was not only made to provide a place of leisure or a total escape from the city, instead is a place that would at the same time be conducive to work or anything that would allow any routine to be done without hassle. The interior of the house as well is made up of windows and many open spaces through rolling doors. This just gives us an impression that the house prefers to be ventilated by fresh air to make the most of the sea breeze instead of using electricity. Draping curtains would also be a good source of controlling the light coming from the sun to enter the whole house. This shows the flexibility of the house to react to different weather changes that might occur.

Risk Management Plan The following are a list of risks that might cause the project delays or failures with their respective outcomes (see numerical list below). The four risks that are in orange bold are key risks that appear in the Risk Assessment Table. 1) Getting approved business loan: This could cause a delay if the owner is unable to get an approved loan to establish the business. 2) Meeting criteria to get business license: This could delay the project if the owner doesn’t have the proper documents to get license for the business. 3) Lack of Infrastructure Availability: This is the lack of having a designated building within the city’s own infrastructure, whereas, the product will have to be produced in a different area leaving the risk of increase in the cost and project completion time. 4) Natural Disaster: This risk could cause the project to be hault due to any unexpected weather conditions such as hurricane, tornado, etc. that may occur. 5) Incorrect Product Design: This could delay the product if the product is not designed according to the requested specifications of the customers. 6) Website Crash: In dealing with internet based customers if the website were to have technical difficulties, this risk could delay the product from customers who shop solely by website ordering. 7) Manufacturers Delay: This risk includes the possibility of the manufacturer being able to produce the product on time, which could delay the production time by way of any issues incurring at the manufacturer center. Such as lack of employees to help get the product produce. 8) Distributers untimely shipment: The risk here is found if the distribution center is unable to or there is a delay in shipment arrival by required date, due to time disruption of some sort by way of backorder, etc. 9) Project Manager has personal matter: This could delay the project if the manager has a personal matter such as death of an immediate family member. 10) Product misplacement: This risk can occur due to shipping agency shipping the product to the wrong address, or address information is miscommunicated. Risk Assessment The following is an assessment of these risks in terms of the probability of project occurrence and the negative cost impact of project outcomes. Risk analysis attempts to quantify the severity of the impact of an identified risk event. The probability is subject to change. Risk Response For each risk, we have determined the action that will be taken in an event this risk should occur. The following will take place, either accept, reduce or transfer the risk. The Risk Response Table identifies a brief contingency plan for the risks that have been identified.

Classification Essay - The Types of Kids that Make Up My Generation

Classification Essay –The Types of Kids that Make Up My Generation One of the things that has troubled me as of late is my generation. The generation that is referred to is the group of people currently aged 15-21 - whether or not this is a "generation," so to speak, is irrelevant. These people, for the most part, disturb me. It frightens me to know that the people that I've grown up with are going to be leading the country and the world in the decades to come. The overwhelming majority of the kids that I've come in contact with over the past few years are apathetic monsters. They don't care about school, they don't care about themselves, and they don't care about their future. To dissect the three aforementioned attributes... Kids don't care about school. Why is it that so many kids decide that ditching school on a fairly consistent basis and/or not caring at all about their grades is the right thing to do? What could possibly be more important than school at such an age? You're a fool to tell me that getting high, going to a mall, getting trashed or any other alternative is better than going to school. You're a fool to tell me that the sole point of going to school is to see and gossip about other people with your friends. An education is the gateway to future success. The kids who don't care about school (all too many) are living for the moment, and not thinking about the long run. Instead of channelling their energies into studying, they instead take the easy way out and have fun. Who wants an incompentant oaf for President? Kids don't care about themselves. Why is it that so many kids decide that injecting themselves with various chemicals is the right thing to do? I can't tell you how many und... ...is that there are other, harmless ways to set themselves aside from others; they also don't realize the irony that their rebellion is actually quite conformist, seeing how there already is a sizable portion of the population that can be labeled rebels. The second sad trait to this is that other, "normal" (meaning non-sheep and non-rebels) people take to liking these individuals, whether it be as friends or romantically. How a rational-thinking person can identify with these out-of-touch miscreants is beyond my comprehension. The so-called rebels act ridiculously outlandish, only to inexplicably generate positive responses from their sickening behavior from others. The rebels crave attention, and the way that they get it is through their ludicrous conduct. God forbid if they don't draw any attention... What do you think is responsible for all of the school shootings?

Beer and Man Brewing Company Essay

Mountain Man Brewing Company was established in 1925, and since then has come to be known as â€Å"West Virginia’s Beer†. In 2005, despite a 2% drop in annual sales they sold approximately 520,000 barrels and reported revenue close to $50,000,000. Mountain Man Brewing Company’s average consumer is male, above the age of 45 and typically in the middle-to-lower income bracket. With a small number of Mountain Man Brewing Company’s consumers making up a large percent of their sales, it is important for the company to appeal to that small number of consumers, and ensure they are satisfaction to their brand loyal. Competition: Recently, the state of West Virginia repealed the arcane law; allowing retail stores to sell beer at discount prices. This creates pressure on old school regional breweries, like Mountain Man Brewery Company, to try and compete with the â€Å"top-dogs† of the industry. Future of the Beer Industry: As beer sales are not largely affected by economic downturns, Sales are however, affected by change in consumer (taste) demand. Current demand: In 2005 light beer accounted for over 50% of total beer sales; putting pressure on Mountain Man Brewery to introduce a light beer line into the market ( or make some other change), in order to remain profitable. Financial Assumptions 1) Mountain Man Brewing Company will only be able to achieve .15% of the light beer industry market share. 2) Mountain Man Brewing Company will spend $1,500,000 on advertising their new light beer in their first year. 3) In association with producing a light beer, Mountain Man Brewing Company will have an additional $69,000 in fixed expenses per year. 4) Mountain Man Brewing Company will be able to sell their light beer at $0.29 per bottle. 5) Mountain Man Light will not erode sales of Mountain Man Lager anytime in the near future. 6) All else will be help comparable to the current capital structure of Mountain Man Brewing Company.

Character analysis plus theme analysis essays

Character analysis plus theme analysis essays The main character in The Catcher in the Rye is Holden Caulfield. The most noticeable trait about Holden is how extremely judgmental he is about everything. He criticizes and people who are boring, insecure and phony. He said, For instance, they had this headmaster, Mr. Haas, that was the phoniest bastard I ever met in my life. (Salinger page 13) He then goes on and describes how Mr. Haas treats people whos parents are rich better than other parents. He hates the way phony people treat rich people like kings and queens just because they are rich. Another aspect of Holdens personality is his child-like behavior. This is evident when he says, Ask her if she still keeps all her kings in the back row. (Salinger page 34) This quote shows Holdens childlike behavior. He is a 17 year old boy yet he is still amused by childish memories. Holden is also a character with a lack of self confidence. He has always believed that he was the one that did not belong. In his family he always mentions h ow much of a success his brother is or how smart his little sister is or his dead brother was, but he is always putting himself down. We can see this when Holden says, "My brother D.B.s a writer and all, and my brother Allie, the one that died, that I told you about, was a wizard. Im the only really dumb one." (Salinger page 67) Holden, the protagonist, is also the narrator of the story and these traits play a very important part of the novel. Another important character in the novel is Phoebe Caulfield, Holdens younger sister. Phoebe is a very bright, young child. She is a very intelligent child for her age. This is shown when Holden asks her if she a song and she corrects him by saying, "It's 'If a body meet a body coming through the rye'! It's a poem. By Robert Burns." (Salinger page 172) This shows a great deal of intelligence as you do not expect a young...

Management Theory and Practice Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1250 words

Management Theory and Practice - Research Paper Example These strategic endeavours have played a vital role in altering the early management approaches from classical to scientific view points. Certainly, these gradual alterations resulted in the development of the traditional management theories which are often categorised as scientific concepts of business management. For instance, where the early management practices described by classical management theories were based on centralized decision making processes, the modern scientific theories have been concentrated on the significance of economic efficiency obtained through a decentralised operational process (Harpaz, 2003). With due regards to the above mentioned aspects, this essay intends to present a discussion highlighting the reasons which have influenced the growth of human relations movement in the industrial contexts, particularly since the early years of the 20th century. By addressing the issue, the discussion of the essay would further attempt to recognise that whether the m ovements have eradicated the influence of various classical and scientific management theories taking into account the industrial context of the global automobile sector of the current 21st century. Reasons for the Growth of Human Relation Movements in Early 20th Century With the modernization of the world, the operations of every industry had to witness certain alterations being influenced by certain factors such as increasing governmental influence over the industrial operations, rapidly changing market demands, increasing competition and swerving technology advancements among others. However, these developments also influenced the managerial operations to be increasingly complex and diverse. One key which was identified to manage these alterations was the role of human resources which deliberately attracted the policies practiced by modern day organizations in keeping their manpower satisfied, productive and motivated. Hence, in order to overcome the problems of multidimensional approaches, every industry was forced to introduce a better comprehensive and concise HRM approach in their operational process. Notably, these changes had been apparent since the 20th century. In the unconventional perspective, HRM can be described as the approach which helps an industry to perform systematically by understanding and motivating the employees effectively satisfying their needs along with considering the code of conducts enforced by the authoritative bodies (Fine & et. al., 1996; Jackson & Schuler, 1995). To illustrate, the automobile industry also had to introduce a better approach towards HRM, altering its production oriented centralised business procedure, in order to achieve the objectives effectively in early 20th century. Consequently, the primary objective of the global market was formulated with due concentration on customer satisfaction and quality issues of the product and/or services rendered, apart from being focused on the quantity aspect by retaining a good working environment for the employees. Notably, it was principally during this century that the management theories became increasingly based upon the concept which deliberated employee satisfaction and the consequent result of high human resource productivity to be directly related with customer satisfaction and loyalty (Ahmad & Schroeder, 2003). The major reasons to influence such alterations in the automobile

Mises vs weber Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2500 words

Mises vs weber - Essay Example Mises’ economic analyses of bureaucracy also identified the key differences between bureaucracy, profitable organisations, and unprofitable organisations. He demonstrated that â€Å"government bureaucracy will be unable to engage in an economic calculation and thus will suffer from significant inefficiencies† (Francu and Hociung 159). Consequently, Mises clearly distinguished between bureaucratic management and profit management. On the other hand, Weber, considered as the ‘father’ of bureaucracy, proposed the fundamentals of an explicit theory of bureaucracy (Francu and Hociung 159). He not only pioneered the most â€Å"comprehensive, classic formulations about the characteristics of bureaucracy†, but his ideas also ranged across a whole spectrum of historical, political, economic, and political thought† (Weber (2) 50). According to Francu and Hociung (159), he built on the premise that increasing efficiency of the bureaucratic organisations in carrying out complex activities resulted in the growth of the bureaucratic organisation. Thus, the ideal bureaucratic system was an organisational scheme where competence and not force or tradition formed the basis for the allocation of power (Weber (1) 25-30). Thesis Statement: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the opposing perspectives of Ludwig von Mises and Max Weber on bureaucracy and its consequences on society. It will be argued that Mises had a better understanding and a more realistic approach emphasizing bureaucracy’s adverse effects on society and the economy, as compared to Weber’s views on the need for institutional structure. Mises’ Austrian sociology is similar in some respects to the Weberian school; however they are two different methodologies. They usually address different topics. With the discipline of sociology becoming institutionalized around the Durkheimian or Weberian schools, Anderson (3)

Managing Knowledge at an NHS Trust Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 2250 words

Managing Knowledge at an NHS Trust - Essay Example For this change to take place, the management needs to follow a change management process and provide incentives to the employees to stick with this change. Hopefully with this change, Reddix hospital can stand back on its feet and shine once again. Reddix Hospital is a trust hospital under national health services (NHS) in the United Kingdom serving over 900,000 patients in the area. It caters to many different medical fields and hence has to cater to an annual 7000 patients in admissions. With only 200 doctors whose expertise includes breast cancer, cardiovascular diseases, musculoskeletal diseases and pediatrics, the hospital finds itself short on employees and due to the recent nurse shortage, it finds itself unable to cater to all the patients are diligently as it like to. Also due to the inefficiencies and conventional systems, the hospital cannot cope up with the demands of the patients and the employees alike. Being a big hospital, Reddix faces many problems in the daily operations which it tries to address. In all its problems the integration between the departments was considered the biggest challenge. Since the hospital has many different departments that provide specialist information to the customers and as well as other departments, it needs to integrate its systems used in each department like Radiology Information Systems (RIS), Patient Administration System (PAS), Laboratory Information Systems (LIS), Clinical Patient Record (CPR), Pharmacy Systems (PS) and Nursing Systems (NS). Without the proper management and collaborative working, these departments can never truly achieve the desired efficiency and therefore effectiveness. Analyzing the situation, it is apparent that the hospital will needs an overhauling of the entire systems and the processes. Therefore a change strategy needs to be used in the scenario to free Reddix out of the crunch situation. It has to interoperate between the departments. In this context, it means that all business units must work in unison to create synergy and lead the organization to achieve operational efficiency. Recommendations The change process described by the psychologist Kurt Lewin in the early 20th century must be followed here. Let's see how this can be done (Lewin & Gold, 1999). 1) The first part of this change process in the unfreezing of the current norms of the organization. This means to change the people's sense of safety and feel a sense of control. The employees at Reddix have become used to the hospital norms and like that norm to remain the way it is. Breaking this norm is the key to success however due to non-commitment and resistance to change, this break though needs a systematic strategy. First of all the employees at the hospital must be made aware of need for change. This involves sending the employees to seminars, or having meetings where the need for change is discussed (Isaac, 2006). When the employees understand the need for change, then the actual changes must be brought along. 2) After the initial education of the employees, the actual changes must be enforced on the employees by giving them goals and objectives (Fred, 2006). According to the report by National Health Services,

Security Analysis and Portfolio Management Assignment - 1

Security Analysis and Portfolio Management - Assignment Example 358). For the stock market perspective, the absolute investment returns are gaining more fame lately due to the start of mutual funds aiming at absolute return objectives. In contrast, traditional mutual fund aims at producing smart relative investment returns as compared to the suitable benchmark. Absolute returns facilitate profitability in most periods and acts over an extensive range of market conditions. Beta measure reduces the risks during the determination of return and risk on stocks and portfolios. Use of beta coefficient in stock selection requires comparison with the market. The investor, therefore, construct the portfolio by drawing the relationship between beta coefficient and the prevailing market prices. Betas carry with them high risks, and markets with negative betas may withstand the fluctuations in market prices. Despite betas helping in stock selection, its effectiveness assumes that movement in the market requires careful analysis of positive and negative direct ions. Also, beta approach assumes analysis of historical considerations for future prediction. As a result, when portfolio selection fails in accurate reading of the market movements, the resulting portfolio selection is incorrect. This method requires a high degree of precision. On the other hand, the alpha parameter indicates the return on security at zero market return. Positive alpha indicates bonus return while negative alpha indicates an undesirable penalty to the investor (Carter & Howard 1990, p. 81-85). Absolute return investing pursues the returns independent of the traditional benchmark and is unconstrained. This means that it uses the modern tools like the hedging strategies in reducing the investors’ risk. Absolute return acts as the modern strategy that pursues the target returns with reduced volatility than relative performances. This enhances the diversification of portfolios for all types of investors (Edwards & Alfons 2004, p. 143). Benchmark Indexes Investo rs establish a long term wealth in stocks due to historical tract record of their positive performance. Most traditional mutual funds constrain the manager to invest in domestic markets. However, the absolute return strategies are less constrained. The objective of absolute return removes constraints on managers and allow for the implementation of more strategies to address the market volatility. For instance, the relative performance may allow for investment in all sectors, but have a high likelihood of influence by benchmark index weightings of other sectors. This is because any divergent can result into risk. This compels the traditional funds take on a market exposure. On the other hand, the pursuit of absolute returns reduces the risks by managers when undertaking a full market exposure (Fornell 2006, p. 3). Traditional Benchmarks When compared to relative performances, absolute returns are independent of the traditional benchmarks. The measurement of funds in absolute returns does not involve the market indexes. Rather, their measurement takes place alongside their return goals. This enhances the removal of constraints on investment managers. The absolute return does not involve any incentive of making the funds appear similar to securities index. This provides greater incentive to prevent risk caused by negative returns (Fornell 2006, p. 4). Inflation The absolute return objective focuses on the elementary concerns of an investor to help achieve a

Business organisations law Coursework Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words

Business organisations law - Coursework Example It means that the liability of actual authority is greater compared to that of apparent authority because there is an agreement already undertaken. Actual authority is said to enjoy more power than an agent with apparent authority because a third party will usually be unaware of the terms and conditions of the agreement between the principal and his agent and thus he will be unaware of the extent of the agent’s actual authority. According to John D Maltas, an agent’s apparent authority will be unaffected by limitations on the actual authority, i.e. it is easier for a third party to establish that the agent acted within the scope of his apparent authority rather than the agent’s actual authority (John D Maltas, p 43) and hence he is said to have more power than apparent authority. Richard A. Mann and Barry S. Roberts emphasize that an apparent authority can not exist where the principal is undisclosed because, apparent authority is the power resulting from acts that appear to the third party to be authorized by the principal. (Richard A. Mann and Barry S. Roberts, p. 350) Normally an agent needs to disclose to his principal all material facts known to him and circumstances that may influence his principal when entering in to contracts. Once an agent fails to disclose these facts, he is not entitled to commission. Suppose, the agent has received any profit resulting from non-disclosure is recoverable by the principal (John D Maltas, p 49). This has been well explained by S. A. Christensen and W. D. Duncan. When one party to a contract pays a secret commission to the agent and does not disclose this to the principal, the party takes the risk of non-disclosure. A party who deals secretly with the agent of another will be considered to have committed a fraud against the principal and cannot later defend the validity of the transaction. This will require the principal to return any benefits received under the transaction, because this will not prohibit him

The discussion of development is commonly classified into two groups that include a discussion on the development of human body, which comprises of physical features as well as cognitive features. The other common discussions regarding development include discussion involving economic, political, and social factors within a particular region. This study will focus on the discussion of development with regards to economical, political, and social factors. In particular, this study will begin with a preview of various development theories and it will then specifically focus on two theories of development, which it will evaluate their efficacy using examples from the tourism sector. It is important to note that development theory according to Peet et al. (2009) is ‘a collective vision of theories about how a desirable change in society is best achieved.’ Fforde (2013) added that such theories are developed from a variety of approaches and disciplines in social science. Among the most common development theories, include mode rnisation theory, structuralism theory, dependency theory, basic needs theory, neo-liberalism theory, and there are other recent trends, which comprise of post development theory, sustainable development theor

Professional Growth Plan Essay Example for Free

Professional Growth Plan Essay Goals: 1. Linking with the school, community while serving as a mediator of culture (TPE 14) 2. Developing as a professional educator (TPE 13). Growth goals and objectives: Â · I will continue to link my classroom with issues affecting the community and promote equality. Â · I will improve my teaching techniques by evaluating, and reflecting on my teaching practices. Â · I will ensure that my class is interesting and that informative. Â · I will develop an effective teacher-student communication in my class. Â · I will ensure that the class is as participatory as possible and that the students are actively involved in the learning process. Procedures and Activities: 1. During Cesar Chavez birth day, I invited a special speaker to my classroom. She has had the opportunity of working with Cesar Chavez for many years. Her name is Micaela Saucedo and as I found out, the experience she has gotten from working with Cesar Chavez was incredible! For one, the students were really interested in her and intrigued by Cesar Chavez personal life. Because of the success of the speech she gave, I have decided that I will continue inviting Michaela to my classroom to deliver more talks. Furthermore, as we know that more than ten-million people live in the U. S without legal documents. Their reasons for migrating to America are complex are they are also different. However, most of us would agree that immigrants risk their lives crossing the border in order to come to the U.S. Generally, they migrate with the hope of creating a better future for themselves and their loved ones back home. Nonetheless, these undocumented people live in constant fear of being arrested, jailed and deported. The question to ask here is why is it this way? The answer maybe obvious for others, but for Micaela Saucedo the answer is a just the nature of the immigration policy. Personally, she is involved in helping migrant workers and recently became the director of Casa Refugio Elvira where they provide shelter to deported children and women. The idea of bringing her to my classroom is to let the students learn how to view the issue from two different points and not just one. Micaela can be contacted at: In addition, Friday May 16, Dolores Huerta will be in ___. I will be attending this special event since she will be talking about a lot of issues affecting our society today. Finally, for my teaching next semester, I will contact ex director of Human Trafficking and Equality to come to our school to give a talk in my classroom about the differences in Human Trafficking and Human Smuggling and the effects it has on our society. As wells as a talk about the issue of discrimination in our school system. By inviting important people to my classroom, I intend to create a social consciousness in my students. I believe that it will also allow them to think critically and understand situations that surround them. 2. Apart from this, I will also improve my teaching methods by video recording my teaching at least twice a semester and later on evaluate and critically reflect on it. I was thinking of video recording my teaching style during the second week of the semester and during the middle of the semester and compare the changes that I have made. The questions I will ask myself include; what was changed? What did not change? Why? After this, I will continue striving at improving it instead of not paying attention to it. I believe teachers should constantly change teaching methods so that students do not get bored with the same teaching style. However, as I figured, video recording myself and reflecting on it may not be sufficient. Consequently, I have ordered The New Teacher Book which is published by Rethinking Schools. From what I understand, this book offers guidance of how to connect well with the students and the community. Also, I will subscribe to Rethinking School magazine so that I am will be informed about ways of improving my teaching techniques and also to be aware of what is happening in the nation with regards to education.

Fat Vs Sugar Battle Of Two Evils English Language Essay

Fat Vs Sugar Battle Of Two Evils English Language Essay Fat makes you fat and sugar gives you diabetes. This is what usually comes to mind when we talk about fat and sugar. Being the harbinger of various life-threatening diseases, both are said to be the most dangerous ingredients of the modern diet. Many health conscious people have become so scared of fat and sugar that food manufacturers today slap the magic words Nonfat and Sugar free on their labels to ensure sales. Despite the slightly higher pricing, these fat and sugar free alternatives have evolved to become the healthier choices compared to their regular counterparts. But to set the records straight once and for all are sugar and fat both evil? Should we really keep ourselves away from them? If yes, then which one must be avoided even more? As a Matter of Fat Filipinos know that eating fatty food can lead to cardiovascular diseases, and yet we love lechon, chicharon, and all the oily goodness of other Pinoy dishes like crispy pata and sizzling sisig. Although it is true that fat content of most Pinoy dishes are of the bad kind, you should understand that not all fats are created the same. Fat isnt actually always bad. Its part of a healthy diet, providing you the essential fatty acids and energy for your daily activities. We need fat to aid in our digestion and excretion of wastes. It also keeps our hair and skin supple and healthy. Fat also helps you absorb fat-soluble vitamins like Vitamins A, D and E. There are four types of fat: monounsaturated, polyunsaturated, saturated and trans fats. The fats that have been reported to cause cardiovascular problems such as heart disease and hypertension are saturated fats and trans fats. Saturated fats can be found in animal fats, coconut oils, dairy products, and palm oils. Trans fats, on the other hand, are artificially developed fats manufactured to prolong shelf life of packed food like cookies, crackers, pastries and chips. These two types have given fat its evil reputation. But there are two other types of fat that actually contribute to good health. Polyunsaturated fats are found in common vegetable oils like soybean oil, corn oil, sunflower oil, walnuts and fish. Monounsaturated fats are found in olive oil, canola oil, avocados, almonds, peanuts cashews, and pecans. Both polyunsaturated and monounsaturated fats are two of the most misunderstood components of food today according to the International Food Information Councils 2008 study, 43% of Americans think that polyunsaturated fats are not heatlhy, while 38% of them feel the same way about monounsaturated fats. Whats the reason behind the bad reputation of fat? Many believe that our general perception of fat today is a product of several years of misleading and confusing information. Studies conducted before on saturated fat trans fat alarmed the government that in 1984, the National Institute of Health gave a recommendation to limit daily fat intake. This gave rise to an unpleasant public opinion on all types of fat making the word equivalent to something evil, something we should be wary of. Because people want to stop eating food with fat, the food industry started developing products that are being advertised as nonfat or fat free. What weight watchers dont know is that manufacturers substituted fat with sugar in order to make up for the compromised taste. We will discuss more about the effects of consuming food high in sugar later. Today, after several more studies and research that exonerate mono and polyunsaturated fats, the US Department of Agriculture now recommends that we get about 20% to 35% of our daily calorie intake from these good guys. The McKinley Health Center website mentions how crucial fat is for normal growth and development. The Harvard School of Public Health even states that good fats can contribute in lowering disease risk. Some nutritionists think that we should get more than 35% of our daily caloric intake from mono and polyunsaturated fats. According to nutrition consultant Heather Fleming, we should get two servings of the good types of fat per meal. Fleming recognizes the importance of healthy fats in reenergizing our bodys cells. New studies are also surfacing to debunk our previous misconceptions about saturated fat. According to the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition, there is actually no significant evidence that links saturated fat with increased risk of heart disease, contrary to popular belief. Both conventional and holistic medicines are now considering meat and other sources of saturated fats to be actually good for our health. The bitter side of sugar Man-made sugar was never really a major part of human diet until the last few thousand years. Before that, we were happy getting our dose of sweetness from honeybees. Eventually we learned to manufacture sugar from sugarcane and sugar beets, then from corn and wheat. Sugar has become such a staple today that many people swear they could never enjoy most kinds of treats and drinks without it. In 1938, a study revealed that a person normally consumed about 16.3 kilograms, an equivalent study conducted after 50 years revealed that the per person consumption rose to 48.3 kilograms. This simply tells us that our generation is chugging in more sugar than any human being in history. Dont get confused. Although it is true that we need sugar to keep our blood levels in check, many people do not know that all the carbohydrates that we eat are broken down into sugar already. This means, we do not need to take in more sugar anymore. There is no extra benefit in adding a teaspoonful of it on our cup of coffee except for making our drink taste sweeter. So what happens to the extra sugar that we take in from the desserts and beverages that we enjoy on a daily basis? Just like any other turbo charged machine, our bodys natural hormonal responses go to hyper drive when we have too much of it. High sugar intake makes us produce more of the hormone insulin. Insulin manages our sugar levels and stores excess of it into fat for future consumption. The more sugar you bring in, the more insulin is released and the more fat is stored. So dont ever wonder why you keep packing on pounds if youre a full fledged sweet tooth. Excess sugar in your diet also results to Type II diabetes, iron and magnesium deficiencies, sleeplessness, digestive problems, arthritis, obesity and other debilitating health conditions. Whats even more dangerous about consuming sugar is that, unlike fat, there is currently no upper limit established for its intake. According to the 2002 review by the Food and Nutrition Board of the National Academies of Science Institute of Medicine review of scientific literature, there was no adverse health effects related to sugar intake. Until today, nutrition labels are still not required to list an upper limit for daily sugar intake. Only those of total fat, saturated fat, sodium and cholesterol are required to be listed, based on standard 2000 and 2500 calorie diet per day. Until sugar intake limits are set, the rise in incidences of Type II diabetes, obesity and other sugar-related disorders can be expected to rise. Fat versus Sugar Now, after all that has been said about fat and sugar, do you know which one is more evil? Which one does more harm than good to our body? If you weigh the pros and cons presented earlier, youll agree with the experts: the answer is sugar. If you arent really convinced yet, heres a summary of why it is so: We already get the sugar we need from carbohydrates. Any additional sugar we take in will only cause nasty side effects on our health. Fat, on the other hand, is needed by the body to function well. People who love eating sugar-laden processed food and drinks tend to consume more calories than those who dont. This is because sugar acts like drug, it makes one want to crave more while he/she is getting it. This causes a person to consume lots of calories, more than what is required everyday. Sugary foods bring the body under constant stress, according to nutrition consultant Heather Fleming, subjecting it into sudden surges of energy. These surges, also known as the sugar rush, are followed by episodes of low energy. Added sugar provides empty calories meaning there are no additional nutrients gained. Fat, on the other hand, is nutrient dense, so consuming a small amount of it will result in satisfaction of cravings. This makes you want to eat less often and have your fill with smaller portions. Refined sugar is not a natural form of food, just like trans fats. Our body is not meant to break down artificial substances. Good fats, including saturated fats, have been present in the human diet for thousands of years already and our body knows how to digest this. Sugar is not part of the Food Pyramid, fat is. This alone indicates that adding artificial sugar on food is not part of a healthy diet. Its a kind of junk food. Eat Fat, Avoid Sugar So what should you do to stay healthy? Heed the warning of experts steer away from adding refined sugar on your food as much as possible! You may not notice its detrimental effects yet, but you will in the long run. Eat balanced meals according to the Food Pyramid and include hefty servings of mono and polyunsaturated fat sources like nuts, avocados, and fish. Include animal meat as part of your meal, but of course, watch your servings. Anything taken in moderation is okay, but if you eat too much of even the good stuff, youll just increase your calorie intake and gain weight eventually. Avoid trans fats found in packed pastries, cookies and chips. You actually resort to quick fixes like packed cookies if you fail to plan your meals ahead. Stock your kitchen shelves with fresh fruits and preservative-free snacks to keep you from craving trans fatty food. If you want bread and pastries, opt for freshly baked ones or better yet, bake it yourself. Read labels before buying food and drinks, especially bottled fruit juices and vitamin waters that pack in loads of sugar. As mentioned earlier, many nonfat or fat free products that are supposedly healthier usually compensate lost taste with sugar so make sure you avoid them as well. Refrain from drinking soda as this comes with several servings of sugar in every cup. If you love drinking soda and cant do away with it, at least choose a sugar free variant. However, be warned that sugar substitutes like aspartame, saccharin, acesulfame potassium, and sucralose are also artificially manufactured substances just like refined sugar itself so use them sparingly. Instead of eating lots of nonfat or sugar free food, nutritionists advise that we learn to control ourselves and eat smaller portions of regular food. For example, instead of indulging on 3 or 4 tablespoons of fat free peanut butter that doesnt really taste as good as the real thing, why not use 1 tablespoon of regular peanut butter instead? Remember, fat gives you the feeling of satisfaction faster than sugar, so you end up eating less. Stay away from artificial ingredients in general since your body is not meant to consume them anyway. Try to take in natural and organic food from crops that have been grown and harvested without the use of commercial pesticides and fertilizers and youll reap the benefits later on. America Online: Is It For Me? :: essays research papers

America Online: Is It For Me? You have probably heard of the Internet, but you weren't really sure if it was for you. You thought about it, but after all it costs so much and things like pornography and improper language are used everywhere, right? Wrong! Perhaps, I can convince you that America Online will be worth your time and money. One of the main reasons that people don't go online is that they think that it costs too much. America Online or AOL doesn't really cost all that much. When you sign on you get from 10 to 50 hours free, depending on the software that you download. Once you run out of free hours you may choose to stay online with a monthly fee. This monthly fee can be either $9.95 or $19.95 depending on how many hours you plan on using. If you are concerned that your children will visit web pages you prefer that they don't, then you can put parental guards on that don't allow them to visit those web pages. If you aren't familiar with web pages, they are basically ads that you look at containing information about the company, person, or product. Also you can sign your child on as a child or teen which keeps them out of restricted areas. Perhaps your main concern is people finding out things that you don't want them to. They only know as much as you tell them. If they ask for your password, credit card number, or any other personal info, you don't have to tell them that information. When you first sign on AOL staff will ask for things like name, age, address, phone number, and your credit card or checking account number. These things remain confidential and are used only for billing purposes. If anyone ask for personal information you can easily report them to AOL. When someone is reported they are either warned or kicked off the Internet. You can also report people that swear or use any kind of offensive words. Many of the chat rooms are guarded by "online hosts" or people that belong to AOL. These "guards" make sure nothing bad happens in chat rooms. You can be sure that there are AOL staff in the romance rooms, especially, because that is where the most foul and vulgar language takes place. If you are too young to be in the room, they will tell you to leave and go to a room where people your age belong. The world "online" also offers thousands of Reference sources like Groliers Multimedia Encyclopedia and over 100 magazines.

Letter from Birmingham Jail Essay

The â€Å"Letter from Birmingham Jail† written by Martin Luther King is striving to justify the need for an action that is direct and nonviolent. It also talks about the Black people and their possibility to resort to disorder and civil disobedience and King’s own frustrations with Church whom he thought as not doing the duties and responsibilities that people of God should do. Martin Luther King does not want violence to ensue. He just wants to implement or make amendments to the existing laws of the country and the ruling of the Supreme Court in 1954 to be observed. According to King, an individual has the moral responsibility to not obey or observe laws that are unjust (King 1963). The mass action does not break the law because a law that is not morally right is not really a law. The laws are made to protect the citizens of the land and not to be used for punishment and degradation of the people. The black people of America were willing to do what it takes to claim their legal and moral rights that are rightfully theirs. They will do this preferably without violence and through peaceful means. If they are not allowed to express their sentiments, then they would resort to a much uglier scenario. If these needs of the black Americans will not be addressed soon, there will be chaos and violence since the people have so many emotions and frustrations that are pent up inside. A similar theme of civil disobedience can be found in previous readings. One such reading is Chief Seattle’s Oration wherein he talked about the relationship of the people and mother earth. It talks about the Native Americans as a minority race and the violence that has occurred between his race and that of the white people. He elevates his people in that oration by saying that the Euro-Americans were also to be blamed for the violence because he recalled a time when the â€Å"white man† drove their forefathers further into the west. The Native Americans want peace to reign in the land. The same with the Letter from Birmingham Jail, Oration talks about resorting to violence if the rights of the people will not be respected and the law wold choose to persecute them instead. They would rather have peace but it is the persecution of the law that forces them to resort to violence. The law that is observed by the whites is said to be morally unjust because it discriminates against minorities instead of protecting them. This justification of moral action that is evident in the two previous works mentioned is also evident in Plato’s Crito. This is a dialogue that will justify the decision of Socrates to stay in prison despite the fact that he was wrongfully accused of doing something that he did not do. Plato made a distinction between the just laws in which Socrates obeyed by staying in prison and the morally wrong behavior of those who accused him. As can be seen from the previous readings, the laws that man has created can be morally unjust for those who are disadvantaged like the black Americans and the native Americans or Indians. Every man has the right to defend himself when he no longer sees the rules to be morally just. Just like King said in his letter, rules were made for the protection of all and not for the privileged few. If people cannot fight for their rights as human beings and are being persecuted, then they have no choice but to defend themselves through the use of violence. The only difference that can be seen from Birmingham Jail is that Socrates opted to stay in prison and not fight against the authorities. He did not feel the need to resort to violence because he was following the just law of not escaping in prison. King’s reasoning for the civil disobedience is being written in letter through a type of reasoning that is inductive. If the government will not respect the rights of the black Americans and not listen to them even through protests of peaceful means, then violence will be used against them. There are universal rights that all people can appeal to. These are the basic rights of man to live, freedom of speech and expression and many others. There are certain rights that are dictated by the state and culture to protect certain aspects of society. But these laws should not violate the rights of the people. The laws will become morally unjust if the rights of the people will be stepped on or become endangered. It is true that rights and laws can be in conflict. That’s why there is a need for the world, especially the governments of countries, to listen to the people regarding changes in the law just like the letter of Martin Luther King Jr.

German language Essay

Learning a foreign language calls for various considerations. The foreign language Germanof choice to be learned is of prime importance, for if the pursuit of this language does not yield any concrete productive results save for personal satisfaction, the course would then be considered superficial, if not at all futile. Some people have admitted that they took a course or two in French and Italian because they are considered the languages of romance and, more so, they are the languages of the nouveau riche and the culturally refined. Take these not as an attack on the nature of the French and Italian languages, but rather as an exposition of how people perceive certain foreign languages. By comparison, the German language would be a less popular option for undergraduates, save for those who chose it as their major and for those who have been required to take it under their curriculum. Most people would initially agree with Mark Twain’s musing: German is an awful language. If a literary genius like him had a rather hard time learning German, what more an ordinary person? Not to question Twain’s posturing, but the times have changed and the brain capacity of humans have actually evolved: the German language has, over the years, earned its own following and people have actually realized that it is an amazing language to pursue. So, why learn German? That would be a tough question to answer since it would be similar to asking why one would even bother learning a foreign language. In the Philippines, people already have their fill of a foreign language, what with English being so ingrained in our cultural subconscious. So, why bother learning another foreign language and why should it be German? Save for some very personal reasons, like wanting to understand a relative in Austria or to work in Germany after college, there are other varied reasons why one should be learning the German language, some of which could actually be socially, intellectually and economically fulfilling. For starters, contrary to what Mark Twain had been saying, German is an easy yet amazing language to learn. If one already knows English, then he already has an advantage. The two languages share many similarities in both vocabulary and grammar, owed much to the fact that they share common ancestry with the Germanic languages. Plus, German is a phonetically interesting language. As much as one finds it rather challenging to execute, due to its varied throat sounds, German phonetics makes it easy to predict how the spoken words are written and how the written words are pronounced. One might have probably heard of the terms â€Å"German precision† and â€Å"German efficiency†, pertaining to the fashion by which products made in Germany have been conceived and constructed. Truly, language is reflective of culture, and, as such, one could safely say that the precise and efficient German language is reflective of its precise and efficient people. And it is no wonder that Germans are known worldwide to be great innovators and profound thinkers. Gutenberg’s conception of the printing press, Einstein’s theory of relativity and Brandenburg’s creation of the MP3 digital music format are all testaments to German precision and efficiency. Marx’s Manifesto, Nietzsche’s writings and Hegel’s philosophy are all testaments to the profundity of the German imagination and intellect. Knowledge, if not at all mastery, of the German language allows one to access the works of these people in their original language, thus allowing one to fully understand the machinations of their philosophy or technology. Anyone interested in the same fields could automatically expand their knowledge and skill by knowing the language. If one wishes to be in the loop of world events, one cannot be free from the shadow of Germany and its culture. The influence of German culture in the world arena cannot be denied, and they instigate this influence more via the power of their technology. With 4 of the world’s 10 most innovative companies located in Germany, they hold 12. 7% of the world’s patent applications. Being a nation committed to research and development, Germany exports more high-technology products than any other country except the United States. Companies like BMW, Daimler, Siemens, Bosch and many others enabled Germany to become the 3rd strongest economy and the number one export nation in the world. Surely, companies such as these need competent employees and international partners. With all other things equal, the job candidate with knowledge of the German language would already gain an employment advantage. And this would not be limited to Germany. If one is looking for employment in the United States, knowledge of the German language would be a great edge since German companies account for about 700,000 jobs in the country. Being one of the economically strongest nations in the world, it would not be a surprise to know that Germany is also one of its greater political powers, influencing the international policies of the European Union and even the United States. Knowledge of the German language would allow one to understand how their policies are written and how it affects world events. For justly, the actions of these political powers affect each and every government and economy in the world, might as well understand where they are coming from and how they are influenced. Truly, knowledge of the German language brings about the personal satisfaction of knowing that one speaks in the language of great thinkers and innovators. But, in this fast paced world, knowledge of the German language ultimately gives one the opportunity to understand, if not at all participate in, world events, may it be intellectually, politically or economically. Language has become the primary tool of connecting nations, thus uniting the world one language at a time. So have your own say, learn German today.

Great Corn Laws Debate

Given their numerous wars with France, Protectionists also argued that Great Britain had some public debt that would need o be repaid and this would be done primarily through taxing the farm land. Since the landowners taxes would be going up the stabilized commodity prices were thought to help offset their increased taxation. The last argument and most important according to the protectionists is in regard to national security. If there was no Corn Law, then Great Britain might become dependent on foreigners or enemies for their food supplies in the event they cannot produce enough for their own demand. The protectionists warn that trading partners can cut off supply at any given time and it is necessary to be independent when it comes to the food supply. The free-trade crowd had a differing opinion from the protectionists. Represented mainly by the manufacturing owners and eventually the laborers, they argued that artificial corn prices drove up prices everywhere else In the economy. Bread cost more to buy and food was the main expense of the labor class. Along with food rising so did the labor costs across various sectors such as manufacturing which In turn made them more expensive compared to their competition In other countries. The free-trade crowd also noted that protected agricultural price laws were driving p demand for the land which normally wouldn't be used In agricultural production. This Is seen as a competitive disadvantage because It would take away manufacturing opportunities which may help Great Britain globally. Great Britain lawmakers concede there will be dependence on foreign countries for a food supply and the free-trade crowd points out the fact Great Britain Is wasting resources on developing commercial land for farming. The free-trade crowd also makes the argument that national security would not be In Jeopardy because trade partners would be dependent on the manufactured goods Great Brutal supplies and that loud give them leverage to rema in viable trading partners. Given the arguments above It Is pretty clear that Robert Peel had a big decision to make. On one hand, Britain was the world's leading economic power and had attained this by being a protectionist's economy but at the same time these polices were harming the labor class through higher priced goods, higher rents along with lower or no wages.Something had to be done to reverse this and there was growing opposition to the Corn Laws by the day. A political action group called the â€Å"League† was formed and supported the free-trade agenda along with becoming a voice for he labor class. Through the League, more and more power was able to shift away from the landowners and Into the manufacturing owners along with the laborers. The League needed support from the labor class and they pretty much won them rising pressure from the citizens. By repealing these Corn-Laws many in power might have seen Peel as a radical for doing this but will eventually come a round and praise him.I didn't see any mention of Peel being a farmland or manufacturing owner so he literally had no hidden agenda other than do what was best for Britain. By participating in free-trade instead of protectionism, Britain could reallocate sources effectively as mentioned by Adam Smith's assertion of â€Å"if a foreign country can supply us with a commodity cheaper than we ourselves can make it, better buy it off them with some part of the produce of our own industry, employed in a way which we have some advantage†. The Adam Smith quote to me pretty much tells the story.Since Britain is perceived strongly as a manufacturer then it is more prudent to be known for manufacturing and not for protecting grain trade. Through free-trade, Britain should be able to acquire the additional food for the citizens by importing from trading partners. There are implications for these actions but in the end the market always seems to prevail. Short term implications for Peels de cisions could leave the agricultural industry itself in shock initially given they are now competing globally and there won't be a fixed price for commodities. This would bring down food costs for the citizens but may also cause some of the farms to cut Jobs because of protected crop prices that are significantly higher than the US prices in the appendices. The farming industry in this time period more than likely looked like the 2008 financial crisis in the housing market in the short term. Rent for farmland couldn't be paid because of crop supply and demand being out of control due to Mother Nature yet the pricing structures for rent and crop pricing didn't really account for this. This short-term farming depression might have spread into the other sectors initially but over time I see the markets coming in to balance things out. Once the government is out of the way in terms of regulating the market, the invisible hand is able to work. Long term, land that is not suitable for farmi ng is now used for manufacturing in Britain which in turn leads to more Jobs being created. Competition for agricultural commodities brings down food prices for the labor crowd which then puts money back into the economy.Long term trends would also show trading partnerships develop across allied countries provided they work out appropriate trade arrangements and trade with each other based on their own comparative strengths. I would also note in the long term, more power is shifted between the landowners to the labor class giving them a voice in the long run. Part of this whole debate in my eyes comes down too power grab. Atone point, protectionism made sense for Britain but later on it Just ere out of control. The manufacturers eventually saw the light and conceited on protectionism but the agricultural sector did not. The power seemed to blind the landowners and mask what was going on. Prices across the board were rising on everything except the agricultural commodities and the lab orers were getting tired. The laborers eventually received a voice by Joining forces with the â€Å"League† and helped move Britain towards free-trade in my opinion. I believe Robert Peel saw this momentum along with the destruction the protectionism caused by stifling competition and had to act by repealing the Corn Law.

Researchers might want to help people, but in the end, business is what makes the American economy work. Â  Pharmaceutical companies do not have a moral obligation to make lifesaving drugs in poor countries at little or no cost. However, it does make good publicity if they do provide lifesaving drugs to poor countries at little or no cost. It also makes business sense due to tax benefits to charitable organizations. Morally pharmaceutical companies are businesses. They legally and morally should not sell drugs that harm. However, they do not have to give their product away for free. Pharmaceutical companies are businesses, not charitable organizations. Â  The Doe Run Company should pay the costs of cleaning up Herculaneum. Is war an inevitable feature of international politics Essay

Is war an inevitable feature of international politics - Essay Example multiplicity of governments are not reduced to one government and international politics transformed to domestic politics." In order for war to begin, a relationship should exist between two parties, as it is a mistake or disagreement in this relationship which leads to war occurrence. So is the growing number of formed relationships due to globalisation increasing the unavoidability of war (1) Fighting is more than only competition between countries, because competition does not inevitably entail a party trying to gain an advantage by dropping their adversary's position. War is more aggressive; it includes conflict and it usually violent. The causes why countries go to war are plentiful and varied; instances include countries going to war to gain or enlarge the territory they possess, in support of other countries, to keep prestige and to defend or advance their economic interests. The goal of war could be disputed to be to show which party is 'stronger' in cases where this is not definite, as weaker countries will frequently be too frightened to fight, and stronger countries won't have a necessity to fight. It was revealed that the closer two countries are in terms of political and cultural features, the lower the opportunity of a war beginning between them. But the great amount of countries around the world means that there is a large quantity of cultures and background, and the alliances formed between like-minded countries are raising the disagreement between the different-minded countries. Donnelly analysed the relationship between international war and the creation of alliances and states that this is where the start of war lies. In general, countries which have lasting formal alliances frequently go through more wars than those nations which do not. And since alliances between major powers often have alliances of other majors powers as opponents, the incidence and size of wars is likely to augment in the following years. (3) There are two main ideas regarding war: that it is natural, and that it is not. The 'rational act' view argues that people are naturally aggressive and hostile, and war is therefore something inherent to humans, and that although war is unpleasant, it is sometimes necessary. Some theorists who regard war as part of human nature have traced it to being a result of our animal descent, or cruelty in an earlier age. Von Bernhadi stated that war is a "biological necessity" and that it was beneficial as it allows the taking away the weaker countries and therefore ensures the continued existence of stronger countries. "War was regarded as a fact of life and as a useful instrument of diplomacy, not as a problem. Peace, considered as an essential condition of international relations, was no preoccupation" (Ceadel 1996) Many European sociologists even consider conflict, and consequently the war, to be serving a positive idea in humanity. On the other hand, in spite of the plentiful claims made about the easiness of war, the facts to support this are too weak. (1) If war is peculiar to humans, then why are wars not conducted between countries at all times Why is it that wars only happen at definite times, and not all the time The contrasting view of war is that it is not innate in humans, but that it is brought about by exterior factors. The examination of the "irrational act"

The Factors that Affect Online Buying Decisions Essay

The Factors that Affect Online Buying Decisions - Essay Example It is generally expected that with the Internet, national and geographical boundaries should become irrelevant when engaging in business exchanges; consequently, global expansion on the Internet could promise greater customer reach and profits. However, although the adoption rate of Internet shopping is relatively high in the West, it is still generally unpopular in the East (Lee et al., 2004, 545). The above assumptions which present the current conditions regarding the use and the evaluation of an Internet site from a consumers’ perspective, although completed regarding the issues targeted they can, however, be been criticised as limited to the geographical aspect of the Internet usage. The current paper examines the online activity from the aspect of the transactions made, mostly the online shopping. Under these terms, the factors that affect the relevant decision are being examined in order to provide a specific and complete view on the issue. The use of research tools, su ch as questionnaires, has been evaluated as necessary in order to gather empirical information regarding the specific subject. Moreover, the data revealed are being analyzed and compared between them but also with the views of the literature, so that the formulation of a integrate result to be achieved at the highest possible level. According to a British Computer Society research (Kavanagh, 2005), online shoppers are starting to desert the High Street; however, the same survey also shows that many people are being excluded from electronic services. According to the above survey (which was conducted by interviewing a representative sample of 2,113 people aged over 15) about 35% of the people surveyed shop online — and nearly one-fifth of these now choose to shop online rather than visit the High Street; in addition, although 46% still prefer the High Street, 36% have no preference, again suggesting wide acceptance of online shopping.

US Military History Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1000 words

US Military History - Essay Example Immediately after the end of the Second World War, the Korean War broke at the height of Cold War with the two superpowers playing a significant role in influencing the war. The Soviet Union supported the North communist region as the U.S offered support to the South region that held the idea of capitalism. Although Russia failed to engage in direct combat during the war, it provided support through offering war equipment to the North region and eventually supporting Chinese communist military leading to the end of the war. The U.S involvement, however, occurred through providing support and engagement of U.S military in combat (Stewart, 2005). The primary objective behind the U.S engagement in the Korean War resulted from the fact that the U.S held a need of saving face as well as ensuring that it appeared stronger than communism. Therefore, it is indicative that America never held vital interests on Korea. In supporting the south anti-communists Syngman Rhee that was considered as tyrannical in the same manner as his North counterpart Kim II-Sung, the support offered by the U.S relates from the simple reason of the south region adoption of a non-communist approach. Furthermore, offering support to Rhee a leader that was equally corrupt and tyrannical served the negative policies that the U.S advocated. Again, the culminating factors that led to the involvement of Chinese military in the war served in portraying the weakness of and establishment of the superiority of the communist forces.

Aesthetic relativism versus aesthetic objectivism Essay

Aesthetic relativism versus aesthetic objectivism - Essay Example end the relation between aesthetic experience and value? Of late questions have arisen and have been likely to have a skeptical cast, as to whether the use of anesthetic is explicated without appeal to others, or whether the term answers any genuine philosophical purpose. The expressed skepticism by these questions did not hold until the end of the twentieth century. This fact prompted the question as to whether (a) notion of aesthetic is fundamentally problematic and has just become known, or (b) the notion is fine and has become cluttered enough for our imagination. Deciding between these possibilities needs a vantage from which to take concerning both early as well as late theories on aesthetic matters. The notion of aesthetic descends from the notion of taste. The reason why the notion of taste commanded a lot of philosophical attention in the eighteenth century was due to the theory of taste that had emerged of which was a corrective measure to the upraise of objectivism in regard to beauty. With this rise especially applied to virtue. While objectivism was against beauty, the judgment of beauty in the eighteenth century idea of taste was to be immediate, against self-absorption of virtue and held the desire of beauty to be disinterested (â€Å"Relativism vs. Objectivism† 1). In any given debate, arguments especially to do with relativism versus objectivism tend to separate leaving no in between. The Slippery slopes myth says that people who are on one side of any argument easily find it easier to blame people on another side of an argument. However, concerning the other side of slippery slopes can also be extreme. For example, the prevalent abortion debates that exist today. Furthermore, the relativism versus objectivism argument in philosophy is not altered either. Objectivists blame relativist of being subjectivists that look for ethical negativism by claiming that morality is up to the individualism; relativist blame objectivists of being absolutis ts of whom believe that all queries have a single right answer, regardless of culture or context. With such a debate, majority population holds the view of falling somewhere in between. Concerning relativism, this interpretation states that the moral principles are lawful, but vary in culture (conventionalism) or individuals (subjectivism). For instance, Ruth Benedict debates that different cultures have different principles, how can someone judge another person. Each of these moralities is equally legal. She goes on to argue from the angle of normality that each culture outlines what behavior is considered normal, in order to fit the majority’s behavior. The said majority population then describes normality as well as living by it, and the small minority is seen as abnormal. Ruth calls majority â€Å"socially convenient approved ways† and standard as â€Å"variations of good concepts.† Put differently, whatever social acceptable behavior is considered good and normal. While subjectivism is considered the extreme result of relativism. That being said we can say that morality is determined on an individual level and not at a social or even universal level. Therefore, moral principles that are viewed as valid are the ones a person believes in. Making all principles

African American Literature Essay Example for Free

African American Literature Essay Zora Neale Hurston is included in almost every discussion of the Harlem Renaissance as a major contributor to the movement. She has inspired several essay length literary works that significantly discuss her contribution to the movement itself. These essays include Mary V. Dearborn’s â€Å"Black Women Authors and the Harlem Renaissance,† Sharon Dean and Erlene Steston’s â€Å"Flower-Dust and springtime: Harlem Renaissance Women,† John Lowe’s â€Å"Hurston, Humor and the Harlem Renaissance,† and Ralph D. Story’s â€Å"Gender and Ambition: Zora Neale Hurston in the Harlem Renaissance. † (Champion 167) Hurston has also inspired many authors to create book length works speaking of her work. Those titles include Robert E. Hemenway’s Zora Neale Hurston: a Literary Biography, Lillie P. Howard’s Zora Neal Hurston, and John Low’s Jump at the Sun: Zora Neale Hurston. These various titles contain insightful studies of the author’s life and writing style, as well as some contain a comprehensive compilation of Hurston’s short stories and essays. (Champion 167) Hurston’s work was not always received well when initially published. It is believed this was because most reviewers during this time period were male. Many saw Hurston as politically conservative and became upset because she was â€Å"supported by white patrons. † (Champion 166) Her work titled Their Eyes Were Watching God received a negative review when the reviewer was quoted as saying that he believes it â€Å"posed situations irrelevant to African American Struggles. † (Champion 166) After her death, her work seemed to have been forgotten, however it once again emerged in the 1970s and 1980s when she was rediscovered and reassessed. Much of her work has been published for the first time or reprinted and scholars have began examining it from the â€Å"feminist, cultural and political† perspective. (Champion 166) Hurston died in 1960, after she spent her last few years living in poverty; she was unable to make a living from her writings during her lifetime. She had been working on a book titled The Life of Herod the Great, but it was never completed. Her death was basically unnoticed by the world and she was buried in an unmarked grave. (Dickinson) The rediscovery of her work has finally earned her a rightful place among literary greats. As many scholarly subjects, Andrew Crosland points out that it is important to remember to â€Å"place Hurston’s works in historical and cultural context to gain broader perspectives. Her works remain visible reminders of tribulations of being a black woman in a white and masculine dominated society. † (Champion 167) Works Cited Balshaw, Maria. A Normal Guy Biography Of Julius English Literature Essay

A Normal Guy Biography Of Julius English Literature Essay Normality is often hard to define. A French sociologist, Emile Durkheim, indicated in his book that normal is the most common behavior in society. Julius Tamara runs a jewelry store which is well known through the city in one of the streets that is full of competitors, Jl. Pasir Koja. And this is about how normal he was and he is. Born in the City of Flowers or Bandung, the third largest city in Indonesia. Julius grew up in not so small family, he had 3 brothers and 3 sisters. Being in a moderate family, he seems to enjoy his childhood where he rode bicycle with his friends, playing with sticks, stones and whatever they have at that time. Its really different from these modern times, there was no television, let alone computer. Radio is likely to be the only electronic based media they have. One funny thing is he seems to broke it a couple of times. Julius is a bad tempered person, even as a child. He loves to angry very much, this is maybe because he was always being accused of breaking things when he didnt, so it is some kind of inner defensive mechanism. Say one thing that might offended him, you wont get it away just like that. Apart of being a bad tempered person, he was actually just a normal child. Julius laughed when he said he was afraid of dark, ghost and supernatural things. He also wanted to be like what other child wanted to be like doctors, astronauts, soldiers, and many more, even though he never achieved one of those and become something else. While other families find their children to be troublesome when they are in their teens, Julius is an exception, losing his older brother at the age of 15 is not one simple thing, its a trivial matter to a grown up teens but he never found himself troublesome to others except with the bullies. He was talking like a grown up when he was in his teens and he never asked question like why he was born like many other teenagers would probably do. He said that his friends were just finding themselves as they are in their development age. Strange thing, he doesnt seem to include himself in it. Despite of what other might say, growing up from a normal child, he was still a normal teenager, he hate bullies but he never afraid of one, he said that he got into trouble with the bullies once and have some childish fight, but he didnt hit even once, he just let them hit him as much as they like cause he knows that the if he fights back, hes just getting himself into more troubles and that will made him looked childish. Apart from the bully things, he also fell in love like other teens, he smiled when he said about this, but he never revealed the name. Like a normal teens, he used to hangout with his friends a lot. If someone asked about who is his best friend, he would probably answer his whole classmate. We love to do crazy things together, he said. They used to play a game, The rule is simple, after the break time when the teacher hasnt come to the class, we need to drag people from other class to our class and force them to stay in our class until the teacher chase him out and its a score Julius explained further. By the look of his, he really enjoys his adolescence very much, the way he explain things and more. Apart of that, growing up in a moderate family, losing a brother sure was a difficult thing for Julius, this is maybe the cause why he doesnt seem to like talking about his family as he likes talking about his friends. He always talked to the point and straight forward in a short sentence. Even though he said it was okay, but for a normal person, it wouldnt be okay to lose a brother. On the other hand, the loss of his brother sure was a hell of an experience for him. This life is cruel, he said. He knows it very well that he was still fortunate to live in such a family and in such a time, at least it was better than before 1945 which was the Japanese era. This might be another reason why he could develop such a personality in such a small age. One random fact, he never wanted to run away from house and its because he knows that theres no other place to go beside home, and what could he possibly do as a teenager anyway. Julius was old enough to see the incident in 30th September 1965. An attempted coup led by anti-communist party in Indonesia. This incident cause more than half million of people to die. It was one of the fearful times of all incidents in Indonesia. Not only that, Julius lives through the New Order era where all the Chinese people would need to hide in fear because of the anti-chinese laws made by the government. As other people would likely to feel, Julius hated the government very much. People live in fear, there is no place for Chinese people to stay in Indonesia, the Chinese Embassy in Jakarta was burned down by a mob. Several of the anti-chinese laws were to limit/restrict the Chinese culture like celebrating Chinese New Year and civil rights, including the adoption of Indonesian sounding names. This is the reason why Julius named himself as Julius which was not Julius before the New Order era. On the flipside, there were fewer corruptions than nowadays. Julius did finish his senior high, but he couldnt afford to continue his study to the university as he still has his brothers and sisters. Even if he could afford it that time, it would be impossible to get in a university because of the anti-chinese laws. Not going to university, no problem, he studied business by himself and doing some little business at the same time. This little business of his is actually a simple business trick, buying something at a lower price and sells it again at higher price to gain profit. After some time, he dares himself to open up a jewelry business which is quite a dangerous thing to do at that time. The place where he opened up the store is quite dangerous, there was an incident, a competitor of his was robbed and 3 people were shot. It was not far from his place, about 3 blocks away. The impact was so strong that he closed his business for a week. God really did his job to protect this man at that time. The robbers were actually targeting Julius sto re, but when the robbers asked a person who was selling meatball in front of his store about which one has more profit, he randomly answered the one that was 3 blocks away from Julius. Speaking of God, his family has a complicated belief. Julius and his wife are Buddhist, some of his siblings are Catholics and some other are Buddhist, and his oldest son and two daughter move to Protestant while the smallest moves to Catholics, this applies to his siblings son and daughter also which is very complicated. This is the reason why he doesnt like to talk about religious stuff very much. Despite of having different beliefs, they actually are a very harmonic family. They always support each other when they are in need. Julius loves to travel to China more than any other place. This was not because he is a Chinese. This is because that China is really a great place to go. The scenery is very beautiful there, its like youre in a fairy tale, he explains. Having two sons and two daughters, Julius still has something that troubles him. Apparently, his sons and daughters are not interested in this jewelry business of his. The oldest son is taking international law, while the daughters plan to make their own business. Hoping for the smallest, but it seems he is interested in IT. It would be such a loss if this business died he sighed.
